Graphites 3X
Introduction: A German physician weindhold, when travelling in Italy, found black lead used
by the workmen in a mirror factory as an external application. He himself adopted the practice,
giving the substance internally also and wrote a book to record its success. Graphites is
plumbago, the black lead of our pencils. It is understood to be an allotropic form of carbon with
some small admixture of iron and silica.
Synonyms: Black lead, plumbago.
Source: Amorphous carbon.
Preparation: Triturations are prepared from the finest English drawing pencil’s lead.
Proved by: Dr. Hahnemann.
Guiding symptoms/Indications:
1. What pulsatilla is at puberty, Graphites is at the climacteric.
2. Fidgety while sitting at work. (Zinc.).
3. Eczema of lids, eruption moist and fissured; lids, red, and margins covered with scales or
crusts.
4. Sexual debility from sexual abuse.
5. Menses – Too scanty, Pale, Late with violent colic, irregular, delayed from getting feet wet
(Puls.).
6. Morning sickness during menstruation, very weak and prostrated (Alum., Carbo. an., Cocc.,
Verat.).
7. Leucorrhoea, acrid, excoriating, occurs in gushes, day and night, before and after menses
(Before sep. after Kreos.).
8. Hard cicatrices remaining after mammary abscess, retarding the flow of milk, cancer of breast,
from old scars and repeated abscesses.
9. Unhealthy skin, every injury suppurates (Hep., Calc., Calend., Merc., Sil., Sulph.), old
cicatrices (Caust., Fl. ac.,), break open again, eruptions upon the ears, between fingers and toes
and various parts of body, from which oozes a watery transparent, sticky fluid.
10. The nails brittle, crumbling, deformed, (Ant. carb.) painful, sore, as if ulcerated; thick and
crippled.
11. Phlegmonous erysipelas, of face with burning, stinging pain, commencing on right side,
going to left after application of iodine.
12. Cracks or fissures in ends of finger, nipples, labial commisures of anus, between the toes.
13. Burning round spot on vertex (Cal., Sulph., (Old spot), Sep., Ver.).
14. Takes cold easily, sensitive to draught of air (Bor., Calc., Hep., Nux. vom.) suffering parts
emaciate.
15. Hears better when in noise, when riding in a carriage or car, when there is rumbling sound
(Nit. ac.).
16. Sensation of cobweb on forehead, tries hard to brush it off (Bar., Bor., Brom., Ran. s.).
17. Diarrhoea stool brown, fluid, mixed with undigested substance and of an intolerable odour,
often caused by suppressed eruptions (Psor.).
Particulars:
1. Skin affections : Graphites is a remedy for all sorts of skin eruptions tending towards
malignancy i.e. keloid, fibroma, pimples, eczema, caner of the breast, hard and painful
cicatrices which have got a tendency to open again. The general appearance of face is pale,
waxy and sickly. Eczema and herpes are found in the face with gelatinous moisture. Itching
with or without eruption, a sensation of cobweb in the face. The commissure of mouth are
fissured and the fissures are ulcerated and the edges become hard and there is great burning
on them. The skin chaps and cracks and often becomes excoriated and bleeds. Erysipelas of
the face spreads from right to left. Crusts form on lips and the chin is covered with eczema.
Most of the eruptions have one thing in common i.e. , they exude a watery, thin, transparent,
gelatinous, sticky fluid. Hard cicatrices appearing after mammary abscess retarding the flow
of milk. Old cicatrices break open again. Eruption upon the ears, between the fingers and toes
and on various parts of the body from which oozes a watery, transparent and sticky fluid. The
nails are brittle, crumbling and deformed. They are very much painful and sore as if
ulcerated, thick and crippled. Eczema on the lid margin, full of moist crusts. There is burning
in round spots on vertex. Skin affections are not inclined to heal but ulcerate readily with
itching over various parts of the body, followed by burning, oozing with typical sticky fluid
discharge. Suppression of skin eruptions causes diarrhoea. These skin affections are
aggravated at night by warmth of bed and before and during menses but the pt. gets relief by
wrapping up and in darkness.
2. Respiratory troubles :
First of all the pt. complains of sensitiveness of larynx, to touch, hoarseness in the evening,
dryness of Larynx in the night and copius glutionus mocous in day time.
He suffocates when falling asleep and often wakes up in the night gasping for breath,
constriction of chest.
There may be paroxysmal cough like whooping cough which is followed by copious
expectoration of white viscid mucus, paroxysms come at any time, cough excited due to
tickling in the larynx or trachea.
Violent night cough comes due to deep inspiration.
Pt. complains of rawness of trachea and pain in the chest.
3. Graphites lady : The constitution of Graphites lady is that of who are morbidly fat and are
now emaciating. This pt. may be more commonly constipated than diarrhoeic. Menses are
pale late, short and scanty often associated with discharge of albuminous or viscid
leucorrhoea at other times. The lady is very much sensitive to cold and needs warm clothing.
There is aversion to coitus. Females may commonly have large hard inflamed ovaries great
tenderness in uterine region or sometimes, even a bearing down sensation. In most severe
cases of malignancy the cauliflower like excrescence of uterus, cancer of cervix, uteri, it is
mostly indicated. The menses are late, irregular, scanty, pale and mixed with scanty, dark
small clots.
The lady complains of menses of short duration 6-8 weeks apart.
In some choleric girls the menses are suppressed.
In certain ladies they give a history of delayed menarche, of leucorrhoea instead of menses.
The leucorrhoea, is watery, gelatinous and sticky, gushes out day and night.
In some pts. they complain of dryness and heat in vagina, extreme lassitude during menses,
many symptoms come during menses; dry cough, copious sweat, oedema of feet, hoarseness
etc.
There may be violent itching in the vulva before menses.
So due to scratching it causes marked degree of excoriations.
During menses there is marked degree of excoriation in between thighs.
It may also be given to a lady with some cracked nipples especially in nursing woman,
cancer of the breast, cicatrices which again reopen to cause obstruction to the flow of milk.
These are the main complains of a lady needing Graphites.
Constitution:
General appearance : Usually a lady of climacteric age, fair, fat, flabby having irregular
deposition of fat at selected locations of the body, waxy and anaemic face, split hair, unhealthy
skin, brittle and deformed nails, suffering from habitual constipation and with a history of
delayed menstruation.
Temperament – Irritable and melancholic.
Diathesis – Tubercular and cancerous diathesis.
Miasm – Psora is in the background.
Dose and administration: 1 tab 3 to 4 times daily for adult. ½ tab for 3 to 4 times daily
children.
Side effects: No significant side effect has been observed in proper dosage
Contraindication: There is no known contraindication.
Relationship: Complementary: Argent nit (follows well in gastric derangements); Caustic; Hep;
Lycop; Ars; Tuberc.
Compare: Petrol; Sep; Sulph; Fluor ac. The associated constipation with mucus-covered stools
and gastric flatulency should be taken into consideration and differentiate it from such remedies
as Petrol and Lycop (Raue).
