Ammonium carbonicum 3x (Ammon Carb 3X)
Introduction: It is a long and deep acting remedy. It is useful in a dynamic conditions,
constitutional conditions and specific conditions. It may be a life saving remedy for the
dangerously ill patients suffering from consumption, malignant small pox, gangrenous tonsillitis
and blood poisonings.
Synonym: Ammonium carbonicum (NH4)2CO3
Habitat: It can be purchased from a chemist’s shop.
Preparation: The pure salt is triturated with sugar of milk.
Proved by Dr. Hahnemann published the proving’s of the drug in the 1st edition of Materia
Medica Pura.
Constitution:
1. Appearance: It is especially suited to women and children. Stout, fleshy delicate women who
lead sedentary life with a “smelling bottle” always in the hand.
2. Miasm : Psora is in the background.
3. Diathesis : Haemorrhagic.
Guiding symptoms/ Indication:
1. Stoppage of nose, mostly at night, must breathe through the mouth, a keynote even in
diphtheria, long lasting coryza, snuffles of infants (Hep. s., Nux v., Lyco., Samb., Sticta).
2. Nose bleed – when washing the face (Arn. mont., Mag. c., Calc. c., Dros., Kali c.) and hands in
the morning, from left nostril, after eating.
3. Ozaena: blows bloody mucous from the nose frequently, blood rushes to tip of nose when
stooping.
4. Putrid sore throat, tendency to gangrenous ulceration of tonsils, glands engorged.
5. Looses breath when falling asleep, must awaken to get breath (Grind., Lach.).
6. Dyspnoea with palpitation, worse by exertion or on ascending even a few steps, worse in a
warm room; one of the best remedies in emphysema.
7. Cough: dry, from tickling in throat as from dust, every morning from 3 to 4 A.M. (Kali. c.).
8. Ill humour during wet stormy weather.
9. Cholera like symptoms at the commencement of menstruation (Bov., Ver. alb.).
10. Menses too early, profuse, preceded by griping colic, acrid, makes the thigh sore, copious at
night and when sitting (Zinc.), with toothache, sadness, fatigue, especially of thighs, yawning
and chilliness.
11. In diphtheria or scarlatina when the nose is stopped up; child cannot sleep because it cannot
get its breath.
12. Leucorrhoea: watery, burning from the uterus, acrid, profuse from the vagina, excoriation of
vulva (Alum., Ars. alb., Graph., Kreos., Lyco., Merc. sol., Nit. ac., Phos., Sep., Sil.).
13. Headache: sensation of fullness, as if forehead would burst (Bell., Glon.).
14. Children dislike washing (Ant. c., Sulph.).
15. Panaritium: deep seated periosteal pain (Dios., Sil.).
16. Body red, as if from scarlatina (compare Ailan.).
17. Malignant scarlatina with deep sleep, stertorous breathing. Miliary rash or faintly developed
eruptions from defective vitality; threatened paralysis of brain (Tub., Zinc.).
Particulars: It is a SPECIFIC remedy for the following conditions:
Mind: Forgetful, ill-humored, gloomy during stormy weather. Uncleanliness. Talking and
hearing others talk affects greatly. Sad, weepy, unreasonable
In Respiratory trouble : Usually patients come with following complaints.
a) Nose : Epistaxis while washing the face, hands in the morning, after eating, specially of left
side. Ozaena when blowing, bloody mucous from nose comes out frequently. Stoppage of nose
mostly at night and must breathe through mouth. Long lasting coryza, snuffles of infants. If
patient is suffering from diphtheria the nose is stopped and child cannot sleep because he cannot
breathe. Respiratory trouble of patient which gets amel. in dry weather.
b) Throat : Hoarseness : Putrid sore throat because tonsils and glands are enlarged with
tendency for ulceration. Cough is dry from tickling in throat as from dust. Cough is severe every
morning from 3 to 4 A. M. Aggravated from cold, ameliorated from dry weather.
c) Head : Sensation of fullness, as if forehead would burst. Aggravated from cold, cold washing,
during menses. Ameliorated from pressure and lying on painful side.
d) In Emphysema: In emphysematic patient, there will be apprehension on breathing and tired
feeling in chest.
2. In female genitalia : Too early, too profuse, too long lasting, agg. at night, on sitting.
Discharge is acrid making the thighs sore; associated with cholera like symptoms at the
commencement of menses. There may be toothache at the time of menses. There is great
yawning and chilliness. There is dysmenorrhoea and fatigue especially of lower extremities with
sadness.
Leucorrhoea : Watery, profuse, acrid, excoriating the vulva.
Eyes.–Burning of eyes with aversion to light. Eye-strain (Nat mur). Asthenopia. Sore canthi.
Ears.–Hardness of hearing. Shocks through ears, eyes, and nose, when gnashing teeth.
Mouth.–Great dryness of mouth and throat. Toothache. Pressing teeth together sends shocks
through head, eyes, and ears. Vesicles on tongue. Taste sour; metallic. Cracking of jaw on
chewing.
Diphtheria or Scarlatina : when nose is stopped up, child cannot sleep because it cannot get its
breath.
Scurvy: spongy gums, raw lips and cracks in the corners of lips.
Toothache: colic; sadness; fatigue; yawning and chilliness with menses.
Dose and administration: 1 tab 3 to 4 times daily for adult. ½ tab for 3 to 4 times daily
children.
Side effects: No significant side effect has been observed in proper dosage
Contraindication: There is no known contraindication.
Relationship:
– Remedy is followed well by : Bell, Calc c, Lyco, Phos, Puls, Rhus t, Sep, Sulph.
– Incompatible: Lach.
– Remedy is antidoted by : Arn, Camph, Hep.
– Remedy antidotes the effects of snake bite, stings of insects: Rhus tox and charcoal fumes.
Complementary remedies: Rhus; Muriatic acid; Tartar emet.
