Introduction: Formerly, charcoal was considered by physicians as non-medicinal and powerless
substance Empiricism only added its effect for Epilepsy. Lowitz a German, discovered the
properties of vegetable charcoal to deodorize and arrest Putrefaction. It was first applied
externally with success to remove foetidness of ulcer, afterwards internally for flatulence.
Hahnemann was the first who elucidated that proving the triturated vegetable charcoal on healthy
persons and applying it in practice.
Synonyms: Vegetable charcoal.
Source: Hahnemann employed birch wood charcoal for the preparation of Carbo Vegetabilis.
Preparation: The wood is thoroughly heated to redness. Triturations are prepared from the
wood ash with sugar of milk.
Proved by: Hahnemann.
Guiding symptoms/Indications:
1. Deficient capillary circulation causes blueness of skin and coldness of extremities, vital
powers nearly exhausted; desire to be constantly fanned, rapidly and from a close
distance.
2. In the last stages of disease, with copious cold sweat, cold breath, cold tongue, voice lost,
this remedy may save a life.
3. Hoarseness agg. evening : (Phos., Rume.) damp evening air; warm wet weather; voice
fails when exerted (morning Caust., Calc., Hep.).
4. Frequent, involuntary, cadaverous – smelling stools, followed by burning; soft stool
voided with difficulty (Alum.).
5. Eructations give temporary relief. (Nux v., Bry. agg. at night.).
6. Weak digestion ; Simplest food disagrees; Excessive accumulation of gas in stomach and
intestines especially on the upper part after eating or drinking, sensation as if stomach
would burst, from the effects of late suppers, rich food (Arg. nit., Kali carb., Colch.).
7. Wants clothing loose around the abdomen (Lach., Bov.).
8. Looseness of teeth, easily bleeding gums.
9. Epistaxis in daily attacks, for weeks, worse from exertion, face pale before as well as
after a haemorrhage.
10. Haemorrhage from any mucous outlet (Cactus., Canth., Chin., Ip., Phos.); in systems
broken down, debilitated, blood goes from weakened tissues. Vital force exhausted.
Particulars:
(a) In Diarrhoea :
Here the patient is suffering from painful diarrhoea. He complains that he has weak digestion,
even he cannot digest simplest food. There is accumulation of excessive flatus in the stomach
specially in the upper abdomen, so that he feels as if the abdomen will burst due to excessive
accumulation of flatus. All the food taken into the stomach seems to turn into gas. He is always
belching and is slightly relieved for a while by belching. The patient belches copiously and yet
seems just as full of wind as ever and some times even seems to be worse. His diarrhoea is of
frequent, involuntary, cadaverous smelling stool followed by burning in rectum. Sometimes soft
stool voided with difficulty with putrid flatulence. After stool, there is itching, burning and
rawness of anus. Carbo. veg. is sometimes indicated in the collapse stage of cholera.
Stool is of cadaverous smelling with burning and rawness. Look of face of patient is of
hippocratic face. His eyes are sunken.
His cheeks are sunken with earthy complexion. There is deficient capillary circulation causing
blueness of skin.
His extremities are cold to touch. The patient is very much prostrated.
His pulse is rapid and thready. There is cold sweat on the forehead with coldness of entire body
and tongue is cold with cold voice.
Patient wants to be constantly fanned rapidly and from a close distance.
(b) In Respiratory complaints :
Here the patient suffers from coryza.
He goes into a warm room and he is going out in a minute, he keeps his overcoat on.
Soon he begins to get heated up but he thinks he will go in a minute and he does not take off his
coat.
A procedure like that is sure to bring on a coryza.
It will commence in the nose, with watery discharge and he will sneeze day and night.
The coryza may extend into the throat and bring on rawness and dryness in the mouth and
throat.
Then he begins to get hoarse and in the evening he has a hoarse vioce with rawness in the larynx
and throat.
Rawness in the larynx on coughing and soreness to touch.
The more he coughs the worse rawness becomes.
This condition may extend into chest.
Secretion of much thin mucus, finally becoming thick yellowish green and bad tasting, such is
the coryza.
The patient coughs with tingling and itching in larynx causing spasmodic cough with gagging
and vomiting.
He develops hoarseness which is worse in the evening.
Aphonia more in the morning with rawness, and soreness and burning, wheezing and rattling of
mucus in the chest.
Along with these symptoms, there is a great distension of abdomen with gas; sour, disordered
stomach.
(c) In Haemorrhagic complaints :
Carbo. veg is an important remedy for passive capillary bleeding.
Patient bleeds constantly which is dark in colour except in case of nose, where the blood is
bright red.
It is not so often a copious, gushing haemorrhage, but it is an oozing.
The menstrual blood will ooze from one period almost to another.
The blood is putrid, dark, even black with small clot and considerable serum occurs with it.
Cyanosis of face and lips of the patient before and after haemorrhage.
The surface of the body is cold to touch especially from knees to feet with cold sweat on the
forehead.
The haemorrhage is of passive in nature from every orifice of the body e.g. bleeding from lung,
bladder, uterus, stomach, ulcer etc. resulting from weakened circulation.
The patient always wants to be fanned continuously and from near which gives relief.
(d) In Skin complaints:
Patients skin is cyanosed, cold and ecchymosed due to venous stasis. His skin is moist without
perspiration, cold and clammy sweat, itching and falling of hair due to general weakness after
exhausting diseases. Patient suffers from senile gangrene with burning pain, bloody, ichorous,
acrid with thin discharge. Ulcer is also found in the mouth and throat. Bed-sore which also
bleeds easily and gives off foul smell. There is ulceration of skin and mucous membrane from
injury which does not heal readily due to relaxation of the blood vessels and feebleness of the
tissue. Carbuncles are also found on the skin with burning pain which imparts offensive smell
and aggravated by heat and relieved by cold application.
Constitution:
1. Appearance :
Persons of advanced age, women at turn of life; prematurely old people, cachectic persons,
young or old, the face is puffy, bluish, pale and hipporatic with cold sweat.
2. Temperament :
Sanguine temperament.
3. Diathesis :
Haemorrhagic diathesis, Passive-haemorrhage of black or dark blood from every orifice of the
body e.g. bleeding from lung, bladder, uterus, stomach, ulcers etc. resulting from weakened
circulation.
Haemorrhagic tendency runs through the whole remedy.
4. Miasm :
It is powerful anti-psoric remedy.
Dose and administration: 1 tab 3 to 4 times daily for adult. ½ tab for 3 to 4 times daily
children.
Side effects: No significant side effect has been observed in proper dosage
Contraindication: There is no known contraindication.
Relationship:
Antidotes: Spirits Nitre; Camph; Ambra; Arsenic.
Compare: Carboneum-Lampblack (Spasms commencing in tongue, down trachea and
extremities. Tingling sensation). Lycop; Ars; China.
Complementary: Kali carb; Dros.
